Why I Chose to Become a Wellness Coach

I had a difficult childhood growing up in Greater Manchester. It was the hardest part of my life, which was both horrific and traumatic. To witness as a child, domestic violence and experience emotional abuse (exacerbated by extreme poverty) meant I left my childhood deeply wounded, in ways I was not to realise its full consequence nearly almost four decades later. For example, one of the realities in my childhood, was that I had to become a primary caregiver at the age of 4 (in psychology this is known as ‘parentification’), of which I literally had to become an adult overnight. This situation I found myself in became a very serious operation, quite literally like an Operational Manager, suddenly I had to care deeply for my mother, this young woman, for no one else was present, no one else was there. I had to do everything I possibly could.

I have told you this part of my life story, so that you can know the meaning of wellness, as wellness is fundamentally about caring, paying attention to what is most essential and important, in the here and now, in this moment – the moment of your life. Put simply, the quality of your life matters. Wellness is a journey, a journey into your own life story, as a form of wellbeing. Thankfully, I survived not simply to “tell a tale” but rather to help others, who might be struggling right now with something from their childhood (as an ongoing issue) in adulthood, or the challenges of relationships.

Therefore, I see being a Wellness Coach today as a huge privilege and opportunity to transcend and transform people’s lives. And that equally, through these experiences and other realities from my childhood, this has helped me to cope with the challenges of modern life. In the context, of personal growth, family life, career progression, lifestyle change and financial security in example. Fundamentally, I feel equipped with the essential tools and of lived experience to be of proper guidance in the matter of human wellness and wellbeing, your mental health. It has therefore taken 40 years to get this moment, your coach. A moment that is historical and socially of deep importance.
